Day 2

Despite the fact that there is no announcement to make, Day 2 can also be emotionally charged.

The night may have been difficult for some. Students have talked with each other, and they may have questions. They compare themselves, they may be confused, and those who were absent the previous day are now having their own reactions to the event. Sometimes the siblings decide to go back to school, and this provokes reactions.

Emergency Committee meeting

The day begins with a meeting of the Emergency Committee to ensure that the rooms are still being used as intended, that the support workers are present and that the commemoration site is well respected.

Survey #1

The first survey, which serves as a “sieve” to understand what is happening among students, is given to teachers, who then ask their students to fill it either anonymously or with their names if they wish to receive support. This survey must be analyzed quickly in order to avoid missing the needs of students who are suffering.

The survey is administered by teachers, who should explain that the school simply wants to know how everyone is doing. The teacher can take the opportunity to assess their students’ emotions, without resuming the previous day’s interventions. Survey #1 is also filled out by staff, as everyone should have this opportunity to express themselves.

The analysis of the results must be submitted to the Emergency Committee. Having a large number of students and staff complete this survey can be a considerable undertaking, but it’s still a must. The form can be digitalized. The simplest method here is to ask each teacher to analyze their students’ responses, as it is easier to have 50 teachers analyzing 40 surveys than to ask one person to analyze 2,000 surveys! It is important to allow absentees – both students and staff – to also complete this survey.

Assessment

At the end of the day, the Emergency Committee meets to assess the day’s events, gather important information and plan for the coming days.
