December
The Christmas holidays are approaching, it’s time to take a break. Still, it is important to plan for any possibility, as an event could happen at any time.
Should an event occur during the Christmas holidays, refer to Delayed event.
Continuous improvement
If one or more events have occurred since September, take the time to analyze the school’s actions. You can discuss the elements of the protocol with which the Committee is less comfortable or certain issues such as attendance at funeral rites, collective rituals, what to do with the student’s desk or empty locker, etc.
Analyzing events in other schools
If you hear of events in other schools, you could use this as an opportunity to review your school protocol. Ask yourselves the following question: “What if this happened in our school? Are we ready for such an event?” A drowning in swimming class 425 kilometers away can be an opportunity to analyze your protocols. You could also contact your colleagues to see how they handled the situation.
Drills
Fire drills are carried out systematically every year. Why not do an annual simulation of an exceptional event with a small group or even with the entire school team? This will be an opportunity to assess the effectiveness of your protocol and to deal with resistance.
Training
Through group discussion, identify areas where training might be needed, e.g., the announcement, grief, managing our own emotions, etc. Whatever the topic, exploring at least one per year is a healthy practice.
